What should you do to a computer before you sell it?

You know you should securely wipe your hard drive before you sell a computer, but is there anything else you should do before you?put it up on eBay?

Selling (or giving away) an old computer is often a little scary. You likely invested a lot of hours into using your computer, and it's packed full of all your personal stuff. You also want to make sure it's in tip-top running condition before you sell it off so you can get the most money. Here's what you need to do.

Step 1: Back up all your files
The first thing you want to do is make sure you back up everything you need. How you do this really depends on what you have on your computer. If you just need to hold onto a few files,?Dropbox?(or any?cloud storage service) will do the trick. Alternately, you can easily?back up your data to an external hard drive.

If you're going to go a little while between computers, a cloud backup solution like?Crashplan?might be a good bet, and it's?very easy to back up and restore your data. Regardless of what method you choose, make sure you run the backup before you do anything else so all your files are up to date.

Step 2: Deauthorize any software
Next, deauthorize any digital software or files you have. This includes programs like the?Adobe Creative Suite,?Amazon's Kindle Apps, and files you download from online stores?like iTunes.

Likewise, it might be a good time to clean up the services?you enabled two-factor authentication on. While the chances of someone having your password after you securely delete your hard drive in the next step is slim, it's a good idea to make the process of someone logging into your accounts impossible from the start.

One last thing to note before we delete everything: If you're a Mac user running OS X Mountain Lion or OS X Lion, you might?need to make your own USB or DVD boot disc?so you can easily reinstall the OS in step four. You can also?download and install the OS during the reinstallation process, but a physical copy of the OS will put your mind at ease just in case things don't go as planned.

Step 3: Securely Format Your Hard Drive
As we've?mentioned before, the only secure way to clean out your computer's hard drive is to format it so you start from scratch. This process is time-consuming, but it's necessary before you sell your computer to stranger. You don't want any personal information remaining on the hard drive.

We've?walked you through this process before, and it's very simple. On Windows, we like the program?Darik's Boot and Nuke?to format the hard drive, and on Mac the built-in Disk Utility works great.

Step 4: Reinstall the Operating System
Once your hard drive is formatted, you won't have anything on it. This means you need to reinstall an operating system before you sell it. The process?is easy provided you still have your operating system discs. Reboot the system, and boot from the OS disc itself. Windows should automatically boot from the disc, but if not you?can change the settings in your BIOS?to make it work. For Mac, hold down the Option key after you hear the startup chime and select your boot disc (the USB or DVD you made yourself in step two).

Once you're done reinstalling the operating system, it's up to you how far into the setup process you want to go. If you're selling a computer online at a site like eBay, you can stop at the new user creation screen. Just power off your computer when it asks your to create a user account and you're good to go. If you're selling on Craigslist, you might want to create a dummy user account so you can show the person buying the computer that it works.

You don't need to worry about registering the software or anything else, but if you have to prove the computer is in good working shape, just create an account with a simple username and passwords (admin/password works), and tell the buyer to delete the account once he or she decides to buy.

Step 5: Clean it Up
Finally, clean up the computer and make it as nice as possible before you sell it. Not only will it likely sell for more if it looks good, it might also run a little smoother. As we've?talked about before, you should do a few simple things: Wipe down the computer, clean out the keyboard, clean the screen, and pop it open to clean out dust from the inside. This makes the computer a lot more aesthetically appealing, and that makes it easier to sell.

Once your computer is cleaned up and it's looking as good as new,?take some great pictures of it, and then?sell it online at the right time to make the most money.

Egypt opposition calls for more protests

CAIRO -- Egypt's main opposition coalition rejected on Sunday Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's?plan for a constitutional referendum this week, saying it risked dragging the country into "violent confrontation."

Morsi's decision on Saturday to retract a decree awarding himself wide powers failed to placate opponents who accused him of plunging Egypt deeper into crisis by refusing to postpone the vote on a constitution shaped by Islamists.

"We are against this process from start to finish," Hussein Abdel Ghani, spokesman of the National Salvation Front, told a news conference, calling for more street protests on Tuesday.

The Front's main leaders - Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy - did not attend the event.

Hundreds of protesters milled around Morsi's palace, despite tanks, barbed wire and other barriers installed last week after clashes between Islamists and their rivals killed seven people.

"Holding a referendum now in the absence of security reflects haste and an absence of a sense of responsibility on the part of the regime, which risks pushing the country towards violent confrontation," a statement from the Front said.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Morsi from obscurity to power, urged the opposition to accept the referendum's verdict.

Islamists say the vote will seal a democratic transition that began when a popular uprising toppled Hosni Mubarak 22 months ago after three decades of military-backed one-man rule.

Their liberal, leftist and Christian adversaries say the document being fast-tracked through could threaten freedoms and fails to embrace the diversity of Egypt's 83 million people.

'Act of war'
Morsi had given some ground on Saturday when he annulled the fiercely contested decree issued on Nov. 22 that gave him extra powers and shielded his decisions from judicial review.?

But some measures taken under the decree remain in force and the president has insisted the referendum go ahead on Dec. 15.

Liberal opposition leader Ahmed Said earlier described the race to a referendum as an "act of war" against Egyptians.

Egypt is torn between Islamists, who were suppressed for decades, and their rivals, who fear religious conservatives want to squeeze out other voices and restrict social freedoms. Many Egyptians just crave stability and economic recovery.

Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said the scrapping of Morsi's decree had removed any reason for controversy.

"We ask others to announce their acceptance of the referendum result," he said on the group's Facebook page, asking whether the opposition would accept "the basics of democracy."

The cancellation of Morsi's decree, announced after a "national dialogue" on Saturday boycotted by almost all the president's critics, has not bridged a deep political divide.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil, a technocrat with Islamist leanings, said the referendum was the best test of opinion.

"The people are the makers of the future as long as they have the freedom to resort to the ballot box in a democratic, free and fair vote," he said in a cabinet statement.

But opposition factions, uncertain of their ability to vote down the constitution against the Islamists' organizational muscle, want the document redrafted before any vote.

"A constitution without consensus can't go to a referendum," said Hermes Fawzi, 28, a protester outside the palace. "It's not logical that just one part of society makes the constitution."

Egypt tipped into turmoil after Morsi grabbed powers to stop any court action aimed at hindering the transition. An assembly led by the Brotherhood and other Islamists then swiftly approved the constitution it had spent six months drafting.

Opponents, including minority Christians, had already quit the assembly in dismay, saying their voices were being ignored.

After the dialogue hosted by Morsi, a spokesman announced that the president had issued a new decree whose first article "cancels the constitutional declaration" of Nov. 22. He said the referendum could not be delayed for legal reasons.

The decree ignited more than two weeks of sometimes violent protests and counter-rallies in Egypt. Morsi's foes have chanted for his downfall. Islamists fear a plot to oust the most populous Arab nation's first freely-elected leader.

Islamists reckon they can win the referendum and, once the new constitution is in place, a parliamentary election about two months later. The Islamist-led lower house elected this year was dissolved after a few months by a court order.

The military, which led Egypt's transition for 16 turbulent months after Mubarak fell, told feuding factions on Saturday that only dialogue could avert "catastrophe." But a military source said these remarks did not herald an army takeover.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Louisiana congressman Charles Boustany won a fifth term on Saturday by handily defeating his fellow Republican incumbent, Jeff Landry, in a runoff election.

The two men were forced into the same district when Louisiana lost a congressional seat because of anemic population growth in the latest federal census. The state will have six U.S. House seats in the new term that begins in January.

Boustany, a retired doctor from Lafayette, will represent the 3rd District covering southwest Louisiana and Acadiana.

"We're glad to get this done," he said Saturday night. "This looks like a very solid victory. We had a very strong ground game, which was a key element in the runoff. We reached out to a lot of voters with a solid message backed by the results I've gotten in Congress."

With nearly all precincts reporting, Boustany was ahead of Landry by a 3-2 margin. About one-fifth of district voters cast ballots.

The race had been attack-heavy, since both men ran as conservative Republicans opposed to the policies of President Barack Obama and had little philosophical ground in which to distinguish themselves.

The district design favored Boustany, a traditional Republican candidate allied with House Speaker John Boehner. Landry, a freshman congressman, was the tea party favorite, but he was unable to build enough grassroots support to oust Boustany.

Pearson Cross, chairman of the political science department at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, said Boustany was the "de-facto incumbent" throughout the race.

"Most voters in the district have voted for Charles Boustany, think he's done a good job, are comfortable with him," Cross said.

Landry said it was difficult to overcome Boustany's advantage in the district design. Boustany had represented more than two-thirds of the parishes in the configuration of the new 3rd District.

"In those parishes that I represented, we did extremely well. In those parishes that he represented, he did well. It's kind of tough when seven out of 10 of those parishes were his," Landry said.

Though they had three other challengers in the November election, the two congressmen had campaigned as though it was a two-man race since the election sign-up period in August.

Boustany described his GOP opponent as a good ol' boy politician who would say anything to get elected, habitually skipped votes in Congress and spread distortions about Boustany's record to distract voters from his own lack of accomplishments.

Landry criticized Boustany as lacking the courage to make tough votes for his district and instead following in lockstep with Republican leaders even if south Louisiana voters didn't support the policy.

The race was one of Louisiana's most expensive congressional contests, with nearly $6 million spent between the two men and even more from outside groups. Boustany had a significant edge in fundraising, raising nearly $2 million more than Landry, according to the most recent campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Pearl Harbor?s role in historic Supreme Court decision

One of the most controversial decisions in Supreme Court history was caused by aftershocks of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and it?s still being debated today.

On December 7, 1941, Japanese military forces attacked the United States base in Hawaii without warning. More than 2,000 Americans died in the attack, and a united Congress answered President Franklin Roosevelt?s request for war.

In early 1942, President Roosevelt issued Presidential Executive Order 9066, after fears generated by the Japanese attack made the safety of America?s West Coast a priority.

The order started a process that gave the military power to exclude citizens of Japanese ancestry from regions called ?military areas.?

Under another provision, called Exclusion Order No. 34, a Japanese-American citizen named Fred Toyosaburo Korematsu was arrested for going into hiding in Northern California after refusing to go to an internment camp.

There were 10 camps set up nationally, and about 120,000 people were interned in the camps during the war. About two-thirds of them were Japanese-Americans who were born in the United States.

Korematsu appealed his conviction through the legal system, and the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case in late 1944.

The court had heard a similar case in 1943, Hirabayashi v. United States, and decided that Gordon Hirabayashi, a college student, was guilty of violating a curfew order.

The Korematsu v. U.S. case in 1944 decision referenced the Hirabayashi case, but it also ruled on the ability of the military, in times of war, to exclude and intern minority groups.

The court ruled by a 6 to 3 vote that the government had the power to arrest and intern Korematsu. Justice Hugo Black, writing for the majority, included a paragraph that is still debated today:

?It should be noted, to begin with, that all legal restrictions which curtail the civil rights of a single racial group are immediately suspect. That is not to say that all such restrictions are unconstitutional. It is to say that courts must subject them to the most rigid scrutiny. Pressing public necessity may sometimes justify the existence of such restrictions; racial antagonism never can,? Black said.

Later in the decision, Black argued the necessity of the military?s decision.

?Korematsu was not excluded from the Military Area because of hostility to him or his race. He was excluded because we are at war with the Japanese Empire, because the properly constituted military authorities feared an invasion of our West Coast and felt constrained to take proper security measures, because they decided that the military urgency of the situation demanded that all citizens of Japanese ancestry be segregated from the West Coast temporarily,? he said.

In subsequent years, the American internment policy has been met with harsh criticism.

One 1948 law provided reimbursement for property losses incurred by interned Japanese-Americans. In 1988, Congress awarded restitution payments of $20,000 to each survivor of the 10 camps.

As part of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, Congress apologized ?on behalf of the people of the United States for the evacuation, relocation, and internment of such citizens and permanent resident aliens.?

President Bill Clinton awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Korematsu in 1998, and President Barack Obama bestowed the same honor on Hirabayashi in 2012.

During the 1999 ceremony, Clinton said, ?In the long history of our country?s constant search for justice, some names of ordinary citizens stand for millions of souls?Plessy, Brown, Parks. To that distinguished list today we add the name of Fred Korematsu.?

President Obama awarded the medal posthumously to Hirabayashi in May.

?In Gordon?s words, ?It takes a crisis to tell us that unless citizens are willing to stand up for the [Constitution], it?s not worth the paper it?s written on.? And this country is better off because of citizens like him who are willing to stand up,? Obama said at the ceremony.

Federal courts had also overturned the original convictions of Hirabayashi and Korematsu.

Dog problems - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Q: I?m mostly venting here and checking to see if I?m the one who is in the wrong. Two years ago, my wife was asking to get a dog and I told her I didn?t want one because they are too much responsibility. I told her I knew I wouldn?t want to bring a dog out at 10 at night, as we live in a condo without an elevator.

Well, my wife got a dog that we have had for almost two years now, and it is driving me nuts. I pay many of the bills for the dog, and the dog is often left with me while my wife is out. At night I have to go out with my wife and the dog because she is scared to go out alone. Any time we leave, our schedule is changed because we have the dog.

We have been arguing about it lately and she has me feeling like I?m in the wrong because I complain and moan about the dog. What is even more frustrating is that lately she has been trying to twist the situation and tell me that I never told her that I didn?t want a dog.

It is so annoying to be fighting over a dog, but I?ve got some animosity built up about the situation.

Am I in the wrong here?

? Dog Days

A: Based on what you?ve told us, you?re right and your wife is wrong. But so what? Even if you?re 100 percent right, you still have a dog that needs to go to the bathroom at 10 p.m.

It?s time to have a calm, respectful, loving conversation with your wife about the bickering. Explain to her that you don?t want to whine about the dog all night. You just want a better system for managing the problem. Do you need a dog walker? Is there any way to make the late-night walks more fun? Can you talk to friends with pets about their routine?

Tell your wife that you also want more empathy and gratitude. You might have a better time dealing with the dog if you understood what your wife was getting out the experience. You?d also love to hear her acknowledge your help. As in, ?Hey, thanks for accompanying me outside with the dog. I know it?s annoying, but it means a lot to me.? Sometimes all we want is a thank you.

You?re pretty much stuck with this dog. Forever (in dog years). Instead of rolling your eyes and getting angry, talk to your wife about how to improve the experience. Tell her that you just want to make this work.
