500-million-year-old sea creature unearthed

Scientists have unearthed extraordinarily preserved fossils of a 520-million-year-old sea creature, one of the earliest animal fossils ever found, according to a new study.

The fossilized animal, an arthropod?called a fuxhianhuiid, has primitive limbs under its head, as well as the earliest example of a nervous system that extended past the head. The primitive creature may have used the limbs to push food into its mouth as it crept across the seafloor. The limbs may shed light on the evolutionary history of arthropods, which include crustaceans and insects.

"Since biologists rely heavily on organization of head appendages to classify arthropod groups, such as insects and spiders, our study provides a crucial reference point for reconstructing the evolutionary history and relationships of the most diverse and abundant animals on Earth," said study co-author Javier Ortega-Hern?ndez, an earth scientist at the University of Cambridge, in a statement. "This is as early as we can currently see into arthropod limb development."

The findings were published Wednesday?in the journal Nature.

Primordial animal
The fuxhianhuiid lived nearly 50 million years before animals first emerged from the sea onto land, during the early part of the Cambrian explosion, when simple multicellular organisms rapidly evolved into complex sea life. [See Images of the Wacky Cambrian Creatures?]

While paleontologists have unearthed previous examples of a fuxhianhuiid before, the fossils were all found in the head-down position, with their delicate internal organs obscured by a large carapace or shell.

However, when Ortega-Hern?ndez and his colleagues began excavating in a fossil-rich region of southwest China around Kunming called Xiaoshiba, they unearthed several specimens of fuxhianhuiid where the bodies had been flipped before fossilization. All told, the team unearthed an amazingly preserved arthropod, as well as eight additional specimens.

These primeval creatures probably spent most of their days crawling across the seabed trawling for food and may have also been able to swim short distances. The sea creatures, some of the earliest arthropods or jointed animals, probably evolved from worms with legs.

The discovery sheds light on how some of the earliest ancestors of today's animals may have evolved.

"These fossils are our best window to see the most primitive state of animals as we know them ? including us," Ortega-Hern?ndez said in a statement. "Before that there is no clear indication in the fossil record of whether something was an animal or a plant ? but we are still filling in the details, of which this is an important one."

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2013: Help Someone ...

While it can be hard to love yourself just as you are, the people behind National Eating Disorder Awareness Week are hoping to change that. This year's week-long campaign started Sunday with the theme "everybody knows somebody" to emphasize that eating disorders know no boundaries.

"We're hoping to bring education and awareness on a grand scale to the public so they can better understand this illness and hopefully help us steer people torward the help they need," says Lynn Grefe, president and CEO of National Eating Disorders Association. "Last year we tried to focus on the fact that it could happen to any individual?a mother, a sister, a daughter, a brother. This year we're hoping to focus on the cultural and ethnic diversity."

While eating disorders are often thought of as something that affect only women, the reality is anyone can fall victim to one. In fact, male eating disorders account for almost 10 percent of all cases. Perhaps even more depressing is that a 2012 study found that eating disorders in children are increasing.

The signs of an eating disorder can vary from person to person, Bonnie Brennan, clinical director of Eating Recovery Center's Adult Partial Hospitaliation Program told SHAPE in a previous post. Common symptoms include an intense fear of being fat, weight loss, avoiding situations in which expected to eat food, using the bathroom directly after a meal, excessive exercise, having conversations that are highly centered on food or calories or weight, "having to" prepare separate meals, and fear of not knowing what ingredients are included in foods (such as at a restaurant).

RELATED: Check out Jennifer Lawrence's and other celebrities' refreshingly honest body confessions.

But it's also important to remember that eating disorders are really less about food and more about underlying issues such as a feeling of a loss of control over life or low self-esteem.

"They're much more about how a person's feeling about themselves, and they show dissatisfaction and anxiety through their behavior with food," Grefe says. "We should remember that we come in all different shapes and sizes and that one is not better than the other."

Think of eating disorders as you would any other serious illness, Grefe stresses. "It's important to remember that they're nobody's fault. People don't develop them on purpose."

If you suspect a loved on may have an eating disorder, Brennan recommends finding a neutral setting and time to meet, and then expressing your concerns gently.

"When speaking with your friend, use non-judgmental language and 'I' statements," she says. "It is okay to point out behaviors and emotions you have noticed, but avoid blaming or shaming. Be prepared to listen and don?t try to problem solve. Offer to help your friend find a professional to talk to."

Grefe adds, "It's important to remember that love and support are vital."

New maps depict potential worldwide coral bleaching by 2056

Feb. 25, 2013 ? In a study published February 24 in Nature Climate Change researchers used the latest emissions scenarios and climate models to show how varying levels of carbon emissions are likely to result in more frequent and severe coral bleaching events.

Large-scale 'mass' bleaching events on coral reefs are caused by higher-than-normal sea temperatures. High temperatures make light toxic to the algae that reside within the corals. The algae, called 'zooxanthellae', provide food and give corals their bright colors. When the algae are expelled or retained but in low densities, the corals can starve and eventually die. Bleaching events caused a reported 16 percent loss of the world's coral reefs in 1998 according to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

If carbon emissions stay on the current path most of the world's coral reefs (74 percent) are projected to experience coral bleaching conditions annually by 2045, results of the study show. The study used climate model ensembles from the upcoming Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Around a quarter of coral reefs are likely to experience bleaching events annually five or more years earlier than the median year, and these reefs in northwestern Australia, Papau New Guinea, and some equatorial Pacific islands like Tokelau, may require urgent attention, researchers warn.

"Coral reefs in parts of the western Indian Ocean, French Polynesia and the southern Great Barrier Reef, have been identified as temporary refugia from rising sea surface temperatures," said Ruben van Hooidonk, Ph.D., from the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami and NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. "These locations are not projected to experience bleaching events annually until five or more years later than the median year of 2040, with one reef location in the Austral Islands of French Polynesia protected from the onset of annual coral bleaching conditions until 2056."

The findings emphasize that without significant reductions in emissions most coral reefs are at risk, according to the study. A reduction of carbon emissions would delay annual bleaching events more than two decades in nearly a quarter (23 percent) of the world's reef areas, the research shows.

"Our projections indicate that nearly all coral reef locations would experience annual bleaching later than 2040 under scenarios with lower greenhouse gas emissions." said Jeffrey Maynard, Ph.D., from the Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l'Environnement (CRIOBE) in Moorea, French Polynesia. "For 394 reef locations (of 1707 used in the study) this amounts to at least two more decades in which some reefs might conceivably be able to improve their capacity to adapt to the projected changes."

"More so than any result to date, this highlights and quantifies the potential benefits for reefs of reducing emissions in terms of reduced exposure to stressful reef temperatures."

"This study represents the most up-to-date understanding of spatial variability in the effects of rising temperatures on coral reefs on a global scale," said researcher Serge Planes, Ph.D., also from the French research institute CRIOBE in French Polynesia.

The researchers involved in the study all concur that projections that combine the threats posed to reefs by increases in sea temperature and ocean acidification will further resolve where temporary refugia may exist.

Only the Tories have a grip on energy

Reliant on generous subsidies financed by hidden charges on household energy bills, turbines do not produce enough energy to justify the expense. They are almost comically unreliable. As Christopher Booker notes in his column, during a period of low wind last Monday, all 4,300 of our turbines working together provided just 0.1 per cent of the nation?s electricity. Ironically, when wind fails to do its job, consumers have to fall back on the very fossil fuels that it was designed to replace.

Nor are wind farms as environmentally friendly as their supporters think. The turbines can be a blot on the landscape. Andrew Gilligan reports that thousands of turbines actually create more greenhouse gases than they save; when they are constructed in upland areas on peat soil, large amounts of carbon can be released into the atmosphere.

What Britain really needs to do is press ahead with building gas-fired power stations, encourage firms to start exploiting shale gas deposits ? potentially a rich source of cheap energy ? and support nuclear. Alas, not all the parties grasp this. During its time in power, Labour turned its back on coal and nuclear to allay understandable fears about environmental damage. Instead, it signed the country up to ambitious targets for cutting CO2 emissions and committed us to wind as a way to plug gaps in energy supply. As Mr Huhne?s predecessor at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband backed a Climate Change Bill that legally bound the UK to cut CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

As part of the Coalition, the Lib Dems have aped Labour?s approach and brought to it new levels of naivity. It is true that even Mr Huhne conceded that nuclear must play a significant role in Britain?s future, but he seemed far more excited by the promises of wind power. The Lib Dems pushed the Coalition into backing even higher EU emissions targets, which would be very difficult to achieve in today?s economic climate. This is why some European countries are ignoring those targets and returning to coal.

Fortunately, George Osborne seems to have a firmer grip on reality. The Chancellor has recently indicated that he would prefer to water down emissions targets in order to increase Britain?s exploitation of gas. After years of chasing the green vote the Conservatives are waking up to the full implications of the energy gap. To get his way within the Coalition, Mr Osborne needs and deserves the moral support of the voters.

Mr Huhne?s colourful record, the by-election in his former constituency and the troubling news about our growing energy gap, ought to clarify the politics for people as they make their choice: on one side we have Labour and the Lib Dems stuck in an outdated mindset, when bold emissions targets and wind power seemed feasible; on the other, the good news is that the Tories understand that while protecting the environment is important, so is getting the economy moving. The voters of Eastleigh have a splendid opportunity to send a message that green fundamentalism is unaffordable in an age of austerity.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler, Army veteran Rocky Bleier to lead Myrtle Beach Memorial Day parade

MYRTLE BEACH -- Former Pittsburgh Steeler and U.S. Army veteran Rocky Bleier will be this year?s grand marshal at Myrtle Beach?s Memorial Day weekend parade, the city announced Thursday.

Bleier played one season for the Steelers before being drafted by the Army in December 1968. While serving in Vietnam in 1969 he was wounded during an ambush and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, according to a press release from the city.

He returned to the Steelers the next year and played for the team until 1980, retiring with four Super Bowl wins.

The parade, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. May 25, is the highlight of a month?s worth of activities for the city?s Military Appreciation Days.

The city?s Military Appreciation Days Committee met Thursday afternoon to work toward finalizing the rest of the month?s events and activities.

New this year will be a Veterans Beard and ?Stache Beach Bash, where participants will compete in a number of facial hair categories ? including one for women.

Men entering the competition need to be veterans. To broaden the contest, organizer Dana King said women who would like to participate don?t have to be veterans.

?Ladies just have to be a lady and show up,? he said at the committee meeting. ?Generally that is a bigger draw than a bunch of hairy dudes on stage.?

King said he believes the event will be the first-ever veteran-exclusive beard and mustache competition.

?[The committee was] looking for different things we could do,? he said. ?I was looking for something unique, something that hadn?t been done before and is fun.?

Other activities shaping up to take place in May include a ?meals ready-to-eat? tasting and cooking contest, 5K road race and band concerts. The committee has worked with local businesses who will give a discount to members of the military throughout May.

As grand marshal, Bleier will lead the parade on Ocean Boulevard and mingle with people at the Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic that same day.

Previous grand marshals include astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Sen. John McCain.

New Port Richey, Florida -- If you enjoy true Florida art, here's a chance for to take a look at some special landscape artists during an upcoming exhibit.

The Florida Landscape Artists are a small collective of painters who work in various mediums including oil, pastel, watercolor and pen & ink.

The free exhibit is taking place Wednesday, Feb. 20 at noon at 6231 Grand Blvd in New Port Richey.

In addition to working in their own studios, they have been painting together on location for several years.

The artists first met, and continue to paint together weekly as part of the group, West Coast Plein Air, a local chapter of the statewide organization Plein Air Florida.

The artists who make up the Florida Landscape Artists are all active working artists in their own communities, which range from Clearwater in the south to Brooksville in the north.

The artists of the group include: Eva Allen, Phoebe Chidester, Jenna Star Friedman, Rhonda Hancock, Anneke Hulstein, Lynnette Vaughan and Jana Withers.

Viewers of their work will notice, in addition to the varying mediums, differences in the paintings' style, color, and composition.

Yet there is cohesiveness as well, that can be defined by the artists' love for their subject matter - the natural beauty of Florida's landscape. The actual locations of the paintings are also often recognized by viewers as they are based on local scenes in nearby areas.

Like many of us who have lived in Florida for any amount of time, The Florida Landscape Artists have witnessed the loss of many of our natural surroundings to hastily and poorly thought-out methods of dealing with development and population growth. As more and more areas are replaced by parking lots, strip malls, condos, and other signs of ever-encroaching development, the Florida Landscape

Artists are united in their common bond of wanting to record in art their interpretations of the landscape around them. They hope that others enjoy their paintings of Florida's wondrous beauty.

Earthquake Deaths to Reach 3.5 Million by 2100

The world's favorite places to live often owe their popularity to local geology that provides benefits, like earthquake faults that line up valleys and trap groundwater ? but that also pose a hazard to the nearby population.

With the planet's growing population crowding more and more into these earthquake-prone regions, a new study predicts that 3.5 million people will have died in catastrophic earthquakes between 2001 and 2100. The toll will add additional stress to strapped aid agencies, said study author Tom Holzer, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif.

"The more people [there are] on the planet, the higher the probability of more catastrophic earthquakes," Holzer told OurAmazingPlanet. "Most earthquakes don't actually kill anybody. What is required is a concentration of people in harm's way."

Massive population growth

Four catastrophic quakes (those that kill 50,000 or more people) have already hit since 2001. There was only one per century before 1900, and seven between 1900 and 2000. The total death toll from temblors so far this century is more than 700,000. [10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

Holzer and USGS colleague James Savage analyzed historic records of earthquake deaths dating back to A.D. 856, then compared those events to world population estimates. Depending on which death catalog they used, the expected number of fatalities from catastrophic earthquakes in this century will be 2.3 million to 5 million, the study found. The most reliable catalog gives an estimate of 3.5 million, from 21 catastrophic earthquakes, Holzer told OurAmazingPlanet.

The results are detailed in the February 2013 issue of the journal Earthquake Spectra.

Holzer, whose expertise is in earthquake risks from different soils, said his interest was sparked by a scientific talk on earthquake fatality rates. He said he was intrigued that there wasn't a one-to-one correlation between total global population growth and earthquake deaths. In fact, the ratio of global earthquake fatalities to world population has been steadily decreasing. "I kept looking until I knew what was driving this," he said.

More people, not more quakes

The researchers attacked the problem in a new way, with a statistical method that accounts for the planet's changing population. Holzer cautions that the increase in killer quakes isn't from more frequent earthquakes, but from more people living in poorly constructed buildings in shake-prone regions.

"There are places, like along the front of the Himalayas, that are just waiting for another disaster," he said. "China, the Middle East and many of the cities in these places just don't design to resist earthquakes. If we don't address this, we're going to see many more catastrophes than we've seen historically, and humanitarian aid efforts are going to be stressed even more over this century. We're going to see more Haiti-type situations."

Remote areas at risk, too

But urban growth isn't all to blame. In 2005, more than 50,000 people died when and earthquake in the Kashmir region of Pakistan devastated a string of villages. And the broad reach of tsunamis can sweep away multitudes in sparsely populated areas.

About 62 percent of the world's population lives in countries with a significant seismic hazard, or risk of earthquakes.

In a study published in 2009, scientists calculated that an earthquake with a million fatalities could be expected once a century if the world's population reaches 10 billion, as the United Nations predicts will happen in 2083.

India inflation drops to 3-year low of 6.6 percent

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? India's stubbornly high inflation eased to a three-year low of 6.6 percent in January, a glimmer of good economic news that adds to expectations the central bank will further reduce interest rates to boost slowing growth.

Wholesale price inflation released Thursday was down from 7.2 percent year-on-year in December.

India's economy is expanding at its slowest pace in a decade, with gross domestic product predicted to grow as little 5 percent in the fiscal year ending in March. That's down from 9 percent in early 2011, and it's paired with rising budget and current account deficits.

Worrisomely high inflation has been the main reason that the Reserve Bank of India has hesitated to cut interest rates to stimulate investment and spending.

The easing of inflation pressure ? the index has now inched down for four months ? gives the central bank more scope to lower borrowing costs but many analysts say the cuts won't be large as inflation is still higher than the RBI would like. The bank has pledged to bring wholesale inflation down to below 4.5 percent.

Manufactured goods led the drop in overall inflation, with price rises slowing to 4.8 percent in January over a year earlier. Fuel and power costs were up by 7.1 percent, but that was down from 9.4 percent in December. Food prices, which are more volatile, recorded some sharp increases. Pulses were up 16.9 percent and potatoes surged 79.1 percent.

Google India Survey Reveals Great Scope For Indian Brands On ...

Who is responsible for YouTube?s growth in India?

Out of this curiosity (read business strategy), Google India conducted an online survey with more than 2000 Indian YouTube users. And the facts that came out clearly shows how useful YouTube can be for Indian brands and advertisers.

The survey identified a completely new genre of consumers emerging in the country; Google termed it Generation C.

Here are the facts that the survey revealed.

  • 2 out of 3 Indian users visit a site mentioned in a YouTube video
  • 3 out 5 Indian users posted a comment regarding the video
  • 7 out of 10 viewers read the comments posted by others below the video
  • 70% of YouTube viewers in India are below 35 years of age
  • 72% of Indian YouTube visitors have a college degree
  • 1 in 5 Indian YouTube users create video every day
  • For three quarters of the surveyed users, YouTube is the most preferred platform when it comes to watch videos online
  • More than half of Indian YouTube users share videos on social networking websites and via email
  • Gen C switches devices 27 times a day
  • 30% of Indian viewers watch YouTube videos on mobile
  • Smartphone owners spend 25% of their YouTube time on mobile while tablet owners spend 20%

Generation C is socially active and well connected. They are also very keen to find the videos they love to watch through subscription or setting content preference. The survey report says,

?YouTube users are deeply engaged with online video, spending hours watching, creating and uploading video on YouTube and creating opportunities for advertisers to engage with this prized demographic in the process.?

Danielle Tiedt, vice-president, marketing, YouTube, says,

?If brands create videos that Gen C loves to share, they will. If you create communities around your brand, Gen C will join and participate. And with two in three Indian users visiting websites mentioned in the videos they watch directly, that?s a major opportunity.?

Indian brands have already started interacting with the Generation C. ICICIDirect launched a campaign to educate people how to plan their financial goals using two animated characters ?Gyano? and ?Mobo?. The Ministry of External Affair and YouTube joined hands to promote India abroad by running a short film contest. Google predicts that as smartphones become more popular in India, the opportunities for the brands and the advertisers to reach to Generation C will be broadened as well. When asked to provide some comparative statistics between a banner ad on videos or video ad that is played before the video content, Shishir Mehrotra, Vice President of Product, YouTube said,

?Our priority has been moving towards TrueView video ads. It is probably a good indication of what viewers and marketers think. It is also the case of different screens like mobile and television. We are trying to focus on formats that scale well across platforms. Another important advantage of TrueView is that it is very easy to scale it. The mobile and television experience is uniform, which is not the case with banner ads.?

YouTube is going to be launched as a television channel in the UK by the end of March. The difference among the screen sizes is getting blurred. It?s high time for Indian brands and advertisers to prepare their strategy for YouTube as well.

Jawbone says 'limited' number of MyTALK accounts hacked

Jawbone MyTALK accounts compromised,

If you have a Jawbone headset and MyTALK account, you may have received an email from the outfit warning that you'll need to reset your password due to a security compromise in a "limited" number of accounts. The company said it halted the hack after "several hours," however, and that thieves only stole names, email addresses and encrypted passwords -- but no other user information, so far as it can tell. If affected, you'll need to reset your password by following the instructions (in the PR after the break), and Jawbone also advised you to change it on other sites too, if used elsewhere -- never a good practice, incidentally.

China joins U.S., Japan, EU in condemning N. Korea nuke test

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of existing U.N. resolutions, drawing condemnation from the United States, Japan, Europe and Pyongyang's only major ally, China, which summoned the North Korean ambassador to protest.

The North said the test had "greater explosive force" than the 2006 and 2009 tests. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a "miniaturized" and lighter nuclear device, indicating that it had again used plutonium which is more suitable for use as a missile warhead.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first a year in power, pursuing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.

U.S. President Barack Obama labeled the test a "highly provocative act" that hurt regional stability and he and other states that are members of U.N. Security Council pressed for new sanctions against the isolated country.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies," Obama said in a statement.

The Security Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss its reaction to the test, although North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states in the world and has few external economic links that can be targeted.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the test was a "grave threat" that could not be tolerated. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the test was a "clear and grave violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

China, which has shown signs of increasing exasperation with the recent bellicose tone of its neighbor, summoned the North Korean ambassador and protested sternly, the Foreign Ministry said.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said China was "strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed" to the test and urged North Korea to "stop any rhetoric or acts that could worsen situations and return to the right course of dialogue and consultation as soon as possible."

China is a permanent member of the Security Council.

NATO condemned the test as an "irresponsible act" that posed a grave threat to world peace.

South Korea, still technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 civil war ended in a mere truce, said the size of the seismic activity indicated a nuclear explosion slightly larger than the North's two previous tests at 6-7 kilotons. The Hiroshima bomb was around 20 kilotons.

The magnitude was roughly twice as large as that of 2009, Lassina Zerbo, director of the international data centre division of the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization, said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred on Tuesday, with North Korea later confirming the nuclear test.

"It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said.

Despite China's tame response, it likely to be a major embarrassment for Beijing, the North's sole major economic and diplomatic ally.

"The test is hugely insulting to China, which now can be expected to follow through with threats to impose sanctions," said Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank.

North Korea trumpeted the announcement on its state television channel to patriotic music against the backdrop of an image of its national flag.

It linked the test to its technical prowess in launching a long-range rocket in December, a move that triggered the U.N. sanctions, backed by China, that Pyongyang said prompted it to take Tuesday's action.

The Autism Project Silicon Valley: Natural Learning Concepts

This is a great article and well worth sharing....

- By Jene Aviram

This article is property of and copyright ? 2003-2008 Jene Aviram of Natural Learning Concepts.? Reference of this article may only be included in your documentation provided that reference is made to the owner - Jene Aviram and a reference to this site?http://www.nlconcepts.com/

The beginning

Two children have a diagnosis of autism.? One is verbal.? The other is non-verbal.? Both have limited communication skills.? Both have inappropriate play skills.? Both are self directed.? One struggles with transitions while the other struggles with noise sensitivity.? One is more academic while the other is more social.? The children are different in nature but equally impaired by challenges of autism.

?

Five years later one child is in a mainstream setting with very little support.? He has some residual autistic traits which are mostly unnoticeable by the untrained eye.? He has in every sense of the word ?recovered? from autism.? The other child is in a special education setting.? Although he was always verbal, maintaining a conversation is practically impossible.? He engages in a variety of self stimulatory behavior, has poor social skills and is impacted by autism in almost every area of his life.

?

What makes the difference?

While there is no accurate information about why some children ?recover? and some don?t, there are certainly a lot of theories floating around.? Some say that early verbal skills are predictors of success.? Others say the bigger the sensory challenges, the stronger the autism.? Many believe there is no recovery from autism and that ?recovered? cases are simply a misdiagnosis of autism in the first place.

?

What defines ?success? or ?recovery? from autism??

Many typical people believe that love, marriage, kids and a good career equals success.? It?s important to note these are personal choices, not success.? There are many people with and without a diagnosis of autism that might choose these goals.? What we?re looking at is the ability to lead an independent life with meaningful relationships regardless of personal choices.? With this in mind, let?s take a look at how you can increase your child?s chance of ?success? or ?recovery? from autism.

?

1.??? Help your child communicate

Learning to communicate is essential for leading an independent life.? Communicate is not the same as ?verbal.?? It?s wonderful if your child can talk but if not, seek alternate ways to teach this skill.? Many are afraid to teach sign language as they fear their child will lose motivation to speak.? This is a total misconception.? More often than not, signing speeds up the talking process.? When children learn their needs can be met, the motivation to speak increases.? Once they discover the joy of sharing their interests, there is no turning back.? Enhance verbal skills by teaching appropriate language about movies, school and things they enjoy.? Teach children to enquire about others.? Conversation is a two way exchange about the same topic.? Sometimes children do better with conversation when they equate it to something visual.?? Explain that it?s just like tennis.? I hit the ball and you hit it back, I hit the ball and you hit it back.? If I drop the ball (by going off topic) then you win a point.??

?

2.??? Sensory challenges

It?s difficult to learn when sensory challenges impede the ability to focus.? People often mistake sensory issues for bad behavior.? Sounds such as a slight hum from electrical equipment might sound unbearably loud or feel painful to someone on the autism spectrum.? If children are unable to express how external factors are making them feel, the result is increased frustration which typically leads to outbursts or tantrums. ?A few simple strategies from an experienced Occupational Therapist can make the world of difference.? Consistency brings results.? Encourage your child to practice the OT exercises regularly for maximum benefit.? Time helps too and as your child matures, he will find coping strategies and self regulation tools to cope with sensory overload.

?

3.??? Different therapies

ABA therapy!? Verbal Behavior therapy!? RDI!? Son Rise!? Floor Time!? TEACCH!? GFCF Diet!? Enzymes!? Music Therapy!? OT!? PT!? Speech!? Social skills groups!? The list goes on and on.? When a child is diagnosed with autism, parents are in turmoil.? With so many therapies to choose from where do they start?? Which therapy will bring the best result?? What about costs?? It?s overwhelming and confusing for parents who want to make the best decision for their child.? Educate yourself as much as possible by attending seminars, reading books and connecting with parents and professionals.? Therapy is just like learning to swim.? It takes patience and persistence.? If you don?t see steady progress within a few months by all means alter the choice of therapy and/or teaching methods.? If you?re trying supplemental therapies such as vitamins and diet, your child probably won?t be able to express how these things are making him feel.?? Always remember that you know your child best.? If something doesn?t seem right, it probably isn?t.? Despite common belief, you are not working against a clock.? You have time to explore various options that you think will help your child learn and grow.? Be kind to yourself.? You are making the best decision you can possibly make with the information and resources at hand.?

?

4.??? Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is one of the biggest predictors of success.? You?ve heard the saying ?IQ gets you through school but EQ gets you through life.?? The good news is that EQ can easily be learned.? So what exactly is EQ?? It?s the ability to understand your own emotions and those of others, and to act appropriately using these emotions.? It encompasses skills like self control, empathy and cooperation.? There are many ways you can increase EQ.? Teach children how to recognize and manage their emotions such as anger and frustration.? Teach them to express emotions such as joy and appreciation. Help them identify the emotions of others and to act appropriately when others are angry, happy or sad.? By increasing EQ, your child will develop interpersonal skills and develop the confidence for interacting on a personal and at the group level.

?

5.??? Self help skills???

Children on the autism spectrum often have poor fine motor skills.? This makes some of the most basic self help skills difficult for children to master.? The desire to impress others is often diminished in a spectrum child and it?s unlikely they will dress independently or button their coat in anticipation of the praise they will receive.? Self help skills are essential for independence.??? While it takes time to teach and master these skills, the value is immense.? Your child is not dressing independently if you have to prompt him through it or lay out his clothes first.? Similarly, if you have to put toothpaste on the toothbrush and prepare a rinse cup, your child is only semi-independently brushing his teeth.? Use visual schedules and teach in simple steps until your child is able to complete tasks without any intervention.? An added benefit is that your child will learn responsibility and accountability which do wonders for self esteem.?

6.??? There is no time limit

It has been suggested that if children don?t reach certain milestones by the time they are 5 or 10 or even 12, they will never ?recover? from autism.? Talking to actual people on the autism spectrum, this couldn?t be further from the truth.? Many adults with autism were essentially non-verbal until they were 10 years old or beyond.? Today they lead productive lives and maintain meaningful relationships.? You never know when that something will ?click? or if it will be a gradual and steady change.? For many adults on the spectrum, ?recovery? only came about in adulthood.? We do know that people are far more likely to succeed when they have supportive people in their life.?? Keep your faith and stand by your child.? You can?t afford to give up.? If you do, your child will feel it and act accordingly.? Your job is to delight in your child?s unique ways and instill the belief that he can achieve anything he sets out to do.? Whatever that is, you?ll be right there supporting him on his journey.

?

In conclusion

Your child is not on the spectrum because you neglected to do forty hours a week of ABA or because you never tried the GFCF diet.? Your child?s current level of functioning does NOT determine his future level of functioning.? It?s simply a guide to help you determine the next step towards a productive, happy life.? Forget about autism for a moment.? Like all kids, your child craves your love and acceptance.? Give it generously and your child will flourish and grow to be the best he can be.?

Day 2 of Sur La Table's "Tasting New Orleans" culinary tour started off with a morning excursion to the Crescent City Farmers Market where locals sell fresh produce grown on their farms, freshly caught seafood (fish, shrimp, crabs, etc), homemade jams and jellies, baked goods, popcorn and kettle corn, popsicles, citrus fruits, locally grown strawberries and other fresh, local foods.?

We had our own personal tour guide in Poppy Tooker, a culinary icon in New Orleans who hosts "Louisana Eats!" on the Louisiana NPR affiliate station, brought the slow food movement to New Orleans, and was recognized by the International Association of Cooking Professionals with their first Community Service Award for her efforts during Katrina.?

And if that wasn't enough, she also won a Throwdown with Bobby Flay for her seafood gumbo.? Poppy's cookbook, "Crescent City Farmers Market Cookbook" features many of these vendors and it was great to meet some of them in person before reading their stories in her book.

Poppy introduced us to many of the vendors at the farmers market (while also buying fresh ingredients for our lunch). Their stories of rebuilding after Katrina and their tenacity in continuing their businesses are nothing short of amazing. It was wonderful to meet a group of people with such pride and knowledge of what they were doing and the hard work going into the success they were building.?

After the tour, we had some time to wander around a bit.? I bought a jar of Mayhaw Jelly from Briarhill Farms to take back for my mom as well as some kettle corn for me (naturally!).? Then our tour group of 11 people was taxied over to the New Orleans Cooking Experience, a cooking school where Poppy was waiting to show us how to cook the four-course meal that was to be our lunch.

This was probably one of the highlights of the trip for me. The ladies at the cooking school were so graciously charming and welcoming. I've sat in on cooking demos before and I went to culinary school for eight months to get my pastry certification but what set this apart was the rich culinary history Poppy shared with us as she went about making each of the dishes. I wish I had thought to take notes or even video but I think even that would have been a thin representation of how vibrant she was and how interesting the history was behind the dishes she was making.

Our first course was Shrimp Remoulade. I was a bit leery when it was being made as I'm not fond of mustard and the remoulade uses quite a bit of it. But I tried it and I'm almost embarrassed to say I couldn't eat it fast enough.? It was so good, didn't taste mustard-y at all and the fresh shrimp (bought at the Crescent City Farmers Market just that morning) in the remoulade sauce was delicious.? Poppy put it together effortlessly and it was just yummy.

Shrimp Remoulade

From New Orleans Cooking Experience

1 cup Creole mustard

1 bunch green onions

1/2 bunch parsley

1/2 cup olive oil

1 celery heart

4 tablespoons paprika (you want the sweet Hungarian paprika)

1/2 teaspoon cayenne

1 teaspoon salt

juice of one lemon
?
?Combine green onions and parsley in food processor. Process together until finely minced? Add the remainder of the ingredients. Serve over boiled shrimp on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce or as a dipping sauce of savory calas.
