96% Blancanieves

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (2)

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

The story might be familiar, but Berger's film is so beautifully shot and so wonderfully scored - and so distinctively Spanish - that it stands as its own film.

Blancanieves holds to the structure, but not strictures, of the source fairy tale.

A new, purely silent movie from Spain that never once speaks and doesn't need to speak. What's more, it seems to get the infinite possibilities of silence, and how much passion can come from it.

Berger's film doesn't show loyalty to any traditional version of Snow White. Berger's Blancanieves takes a darker approach, which seems appropriate.

A completely enchanting fairy tale about the vicissitudes of fate, in live action and glorious black and white.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

Much of the film's emotion is conveyed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's music, which celebrates Spain with uptempo guitar and flamenco when it isn't tipping its hat to Bernard Herrmann during a scene inspired by Hitchcock.

Unpacking 'Communication' | Management4Volunteers Blog

Posted in Best Practice, Language, Leading Volunteers, Valuing Volunteers tagged community leadership, Leadership skills, Managers of Volunteers at 4:21 am by Sue Hine

communication-pattern[1]A member of parliament resigned this week, in disgrace.? For ten days the news media communicated to the public arena all the ill-chosen words that were spoken, emailed and twittered, plus as many details as they could extract from the Prime Minister. ??The MP could not have managed better his exit from the political stage.? All because what he said, the way he said it and the medium he used compounded his errors.? His resignation and departure saves the coalition government?s slender majority, and shows us all how critical the choice of words and the way they are said can be.

Put a bunch of managers of volunteers together, ask them to nominate the most important principle in leading volunteers, and 80% will tell you it?s Communication.

Of course!? Except Communication is a really big carpet-bag word, stuffed full of a range of meanings and processes and practice ? and technologies.? It?s time we unpacked the implications of the word and understand how it is best used in the context of a volunteer programme.

Communication is about Exchange of Information?? Yes, the sending and receiving of accurate information is all-important to help volunteers into the organisation and for on-going retention.? Ensuring information about volunteers and the volunteer programme is spread to other staff and senior managers is also important.? And ? being timely in responding to queries and messages: there?s nothing worse than sitting around waiting to hear back from someone, even if it is simply an acknowledgement your message has been received.

Because Communication is also about Relationships ??It?s about creating personal connections, getting to know people and their circumstances.? It?s about getting alongside paid staff, creating goodwill, and their understanding and appreciation of volunteer work.? And you don?t get good relationships going without being a Listener.? You have to be really genuine in meeting and greeting and appreciating volunteers ? they will see through formulaic responses very smartly.

Communication is about inter-connectedness?? Communication is the way to create links with communities, to network with other managers of volunteers, and to open up intra-organisation channels.? Beware the pitfalls of ?talking past each other? whether in cross-cultural communication or in everyday exchanges.? It?s the intimacy of interpersonal interaction that counts towards real connections.

Communication is a leadership dynamic?? A leader?s support, encouragement, enthusiasm and inspiration do not happen in isolation ? by definition there is always a following team.? So a leader is tuned to know which buttons to press and when and what words to use, and how to draw in the reluctant player, or to spur the confidence of the shy and retiring volunteer, or to find new ways to develop volunteer talents. ?A good communicator will also demonstrate the value of a volunteer programme to the organisation.

You cannot not communicate??? There?s a truism for you!? The experts can demonstrate how just 10% of a message is conveyed in words.? The rest is non-verbal, the body language, the tone of voice, the facial expression.? So even a tight-lipped poker-face is sending a message, whether they mean to or not.

Hang on a minute ? a heck of a lot of our communication these days is not face-to-face.? You?ve got everything from formal letters, newsletters and written planning and policy papers, to email and social media, to websites and webinars.? So the written word is still a primary tool for communicating ideas and information.

Being a communicator and minding our language comes with the territory of managing volunteers. I reckon we could teach foolish MPs a thing or two.

Ex-Pa. officer once hailed as hero faces charges

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A former Philadelphia police officer once hailed as a hero and given a seat next to the first lady at a speech by President Obama has been arrested and charged with rape and other crimes.

Authorities allege that former officer Richard DeCoatsworth left a party with two females early Thursday and took them to another location, where they allege that he produced a handgun and "forced the two females to engage in the use of narcotics and sexual acts."

A police spokeswoman said the two called police after he left, and 27-year-old DeCoatsworth was later arrested. According to court records, DeCoatsworth was arraigned Saturday night on charges including rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, trafficking of persons, false imprisonment and aggravated assault. His bail was set at $60 million.

DeCoatsworth was hailed as a hero after he was shot in the face during a traffic stop in September 2007 but still managed to chase after his attacker, who was later sentenced to 36 to 72 years in prison.

DeCoatsworth was invited by Vice President Joe Biden to attend the president's televised February 2009 address to Congress and sat with first lady Michelle Obama. He said he didn't know why he had been singled out, but being in the presence of the nation's leaders was an honor "that I will keep with me for the rest of my life."

WCAU-TV, which first reported his arrest, said DeCoatsworth retired from the department on disability in December 2011.

Police said no other information on the alleged attack would be released Saturday to protect the victims and the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Authorities declined to say give even general locations for the party and alleged crime scene and also wouldn't say when DeCoatsworth was arrested.

A listed number for DeCoatsworth has been disconnected and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told a Philadelphia Daily News columnist in February of last year that he believed he had made a mistake in granting the former officer's request to go back to work too soon after he was shot.

"God bless him for still wanting to get out there and do police work, but did I act in his best interest? In hindsight, I would say probably not," Ramsey told columnist Sty Bykofsky.

French president signs gay marriage into law

(AP) ? France will see its first gay weddings within days, after French President Francois Hollande signed a law Saturday authorizing marriage and adoption by same-sex couples and ending months of nationwide protests and wrenching debate.

Hollande's office said he signed the bill Saturday morning, a day after the Constitutional Council struck down a challenge to the law and ruled it in line with France's constitution.

Hollande, a Socialist, had made legalizing gay marriage one of his campaign pledges last year. While polls for years have shown majority support for gay marriage in France, adoption by same-sex couples is more controversial.

The parliamentary debate exposed a deep conservatism and attachment to traditional families in France's rural core that is often eclipsed by and at odds with libertine Paris.

But mostly, it tapped into deep discontent with the Socialist government, largely over Hollande's handling of the economy. Months of anti-gay marriage protests became a flashpoint for frustrations with Hollande, and occasionally degenerated into violence.

In addition, gay rights groups reported a rise in attacks on homosexuals as the parliamentary debate was under way. Protest organizers distanced themselves from the trouble-makers.

The opposition isn't ready to give up. It plans a protest May 26 that aims to parlay the success of the anti-gay marriage movement into a broader anti-Hollande one. Among those expected to attend is Jean-Francois Cope, the leader of the opposition UMP party, riven by divisions and struggling for direction since Nicolas Sarkozy lost the presidency last year.

Hollande warned that he wouldn't accept any disruption of France's first gay marriages.

One couple signed up Saturday to tie the knot on May 29 in the gay-friendly southern French city of Montpellier.

"We're very happy that today we can finally talk of love after all the talk of legislation and political battles," one of the future newlyweds, Vincent Autin, said on France-Info radio.

According to French law, couples must register to marry in city hall and wait at least 10 days before holding a ceremony so that anyone objecting to the union ? such as an existing spouse ? has time to intervene.

Marketing whizzes are already preparing lesbian and gay cake toppers, his-and-his wedding bands, and other services for France's gay weddings.

Despite the protests, the law passed easily in both houses of parliament, which are dominated by Hollande's Socialists. And the Constitutional Council said, "Marriage as a union between a man and a woman cannot be considered a fundamental principle."

France is the most populous country to have legal gay marriages, and the 14th country worldwide. In the United States, Minnesota became the 12th state in the country to legalize same-sex unions on Tuesday.

In neighboring Belgium, thousands of people took to the confetti-covered streets of Brussels to take part in an annual gay pride march on Saturday. Trucks blasting music and carrying dance floors made their way through cheering crowds. Belgium legalized gay marriage 10 years ago and permitted adoption for same-sex couples seven years ago.

Big bling free to celebs in Cannes 'gifting suites'

Celebs

Gather hundreds of celebrities and film executives on the French Riviera for the Cannes Film Festival and naturally, they need their glitter and glam.

One way the famous end up looking so good and so trendy is that often, they don't have to bring, or buy, their own fabulousness: They get special invitations to luxury "gifting suites" set up in hotel rooms at the film festival and can walk out with thousands of dollars of clothes and jewelry.

These rooms of swag aren't the only places where there's bling-related excitement to be found -- someone stole jewels meant for celebrities to wear on the red carpet straight from a hotel room very early on in the festival.

The Hollywood Reporter took a look inside some of these swag rooms stocked by famous brands including Chanel, Swarovski, Dior, and Jimmy Choo to find out what's up for grabs -- if you've got the right A-list name. Check out the video!

Obama turns his attention to jobs, economy

After a week filled with controversy and criticism, President Barack Obama left town Friday for Baltimore, the second stop on his "Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour." The trip, which was previously scheduled, took him to a dredging manufacturer and an elementary school, with the next stop on the itinerary a community center.

At Ellicott Dredges in Baltimore, Obama announced an effort to reduce infrastructure red tape as a way to boost the economy.

"Sometimes it takes too long to get projects off the ground," Obama said during a speech, citing permits, red tape and planning delays related to infrastructure projects. "Today, I'm directing agencies across the government to do what it takes to cut timelines for breaking ground on major infrastructure projects in half. And what that means is that construction workers get back on the jobs faster, it means more money going back into local economies, and it means more demand for outstanding dredging equipment that is made right here in Baltimore."

The stop at the manufacturer adds the potential of controversy to his trip. The owner of Ellicott Dredges, Peter Bowe, shares the view of many congressional Republicans in support of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Bowe testified before Congress on the issue Thursday. Obama has yet to announce a position on the pipeline?which would carry oil from Canada and the northern United States to the Gulf Coast?but faces pressure from environmentalists and others to reject the proposal.

Controversy over the pipeline has dogged the president on other unrelated trips. During a fundraising swing in California last month, the fact that the event was being hosted by pipeline opponent Tom Steyer, a hedge fund billionaire and environmentalist, drew pipeline protesters who sought to draw attention to the issue.

Obama made no references to the pipeline in his public remarks at Ellicott Dredges, but thanked Bowe?who gave the president a tour of the facility?for his work at the company.

Much of the president's speech echoed remarks he made last week in Texas, his first stop on the "Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour." While there he announced manufacturing competitions to create "manufacturing innovation institutes" in the United States.

As he did last week, Obama conceded that Washington may not appear to the public to be a place generating much positive news, but that there are things to celebrate about the economy, including rebounds in the housing market and gains in certain industry sectors.

His standard criticism of members of Congress (whom he has been publicly chastising for stalemates in Washington) appeared to be tempered by the attendance Friday of several Democratic leaders: Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, and Reps. Steny Hoyer, Paul Sarbanes and Elijah Cummings.

"All of your members of Congress every single day are working, fighting on your behalf in terms of making sure we're growing an economy that creates outstanding middle-class jobs," Obama said.

Prior to Ellicott, Obama stopped at Moravia Park Elementary School, where he sat in on a classroom lesson for 4- and 5-year-olds. Later, during his speech at Ellicott, he noted this visit and the goals behind his State of the Union proposal to create universal pre-kindergarten.

He was scheduled next to visit the Center for Urban Families, a nonprofit that aides fathers and families, for a roundtable discussion. That visit will be tied to his Promise Zone budget proposal to identify and assist hard-hit communities, according to the White House.

As the president left Washington earlier on Friday, the House Ways and Means Committee on Capitol Hill grilled the ousted acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, Steven Miller, over recent revelations that the IRS targeted conservatives applying for tax-exempt status. After the allegations were confirmed Wednesday by the Treasury Department inspector general's report, Obama announced that Miller had been forced to resign.

That action came amid continued pressure on the administration to explain revisions made to talking points related to the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya?to which the White House responded Wednesday by releasing those emails to the media?and controversy surrounding the Department of Justice's secret seizure of Associated Press reporters' and editors' phone records in the investigation of a national security leak.

The iCargo project (Intelligent Cargo in Efficient and Sustainable Global Logistics Operations) is aiming to cut CO2 emissions, thanks to an improvement in the efficiency of intermodal loading systems and the boosting of intelligent systems that assist decision making. It comprises 29 European organisations with experience in the logistics sector and in supply chain management. It has a budget totalling 17,000,000 and a duration of three and a half years.

Tecnalia is working to specify and develop the semantic components and ontologies shared by the users, objects and systems that make up the iCargo ecosystem: autonomous loading units; intelligent vehicles and infrastructure; and players in the logistics markets and their pre-existing platforms. That way, a common language that will enable them to exchange information in real time will be used.

The project is boosting and expanding the use of Information and Communications Technologies in the production of logistics services through the development of a platform that will allow:

  • vehicle movements and intermodal logistics operations among the various players involved to be synchronised, thereby lowering CO2 emissions;
  • dynamic planning methods involving intelligent loads, vehicles and infrastructure capable of adapting to changing conditions to be designed;
  • an open ecosystem to manage merchandise by combining services, resources and the information of various stakeholders to be generated.

This project will mean new business opportunities for service providers, and an easy way to manage logistics chains through the configuration of a more flexible, more robust distribution chain. It will also make an improvement in economic and environmental efficiency possible, and consequently a cut in CO2 emissions.

Validating iCargo

The iCargo results shall be validated through three use cases which will prove the validity of the iCargo ecosystem:

  • Sea-City-Air-Rail door-to-door service: this pilot project focuses on improving the Sea-City-Air-Rail door-to-door service of customers between Northern Europe and Italy including those located in urban areas. The participating players are road hauliers, port operators and rail operators. The iCargo platform will enable dynamic real-time operations replanning throughout the transport chain taking commercial restrictions into account, with the aim of improving the environmental profile of the designated route.
  • Green corridor between Sweden and continental Europe: this business case seeks to integrate what are known as "green coastal motorways" with inland co-modal transport options with the aim of boosting the efficiency of traffic load and management in logistics processes, to such an extent that it allows the substitution of loads in the event of delays, for example, thus enabling maximum use to be made of the vessel.
  • Logistics Services Supplier Cooperation Haulier: this pilot project shows how to improve the sustainability of the entire distribution chain by initiating joint planning and implementation solutions which involve the various stakeholders participating in the process.

iCargo will actively participate in two important events in the Transport and Logistics fields: Transport Logistic, that will take place in Munich 4-6 June, and will count with a workshop and a round table on iCargo; and in the 6th European Conference on ICT for Transport Logistics, ECITL 2013, that will take place in Zaragoza (Spain) 23-25 October 2013.

Getting Into Internet Marketing? Read These Great Tips! ? Hot Article ...

Whether your business is conducted wholly online or not, internet marketing is an important part of corporate advertising in this modern, technological age. It is the most effective way of making sure the world knows of the products you have to sell or the message you want to be heard. Here are some ways that you can use this technique to its best advantage.

Try to combine your products together and offer a discount for people who purchase the entire package instead of one item at a time. People love to have the feeling that they got a deal on something. This will also increase exposure for the other products you have to offer on the site.

Are you ready to try internet marketing? Good for you! Make your website look professional! If your website obviously looks unprofessional, people will not trust it. They will not want to buy from you! You can easily find templates for business websites or even use a blog, if you cannot afford to hire a web designer!

One internet marketing tip that anyone can implement is to give your past customers a catalog of add on items that are directly related to items they have previously bought. You already know what sorts of items they have bought from you so sending them related products is a good way to get repeat customers.

They key to getting more visits is to write a good review of your website. A review is the short paragraph that appears when your website comes up in a search result. A good review should instantly grab the visitor?s attention and make them want to learn more about your website.

In order to have effective advertisements in terms of internet marketing, a good strategy to use is to add words such as ?you or your? in your advertisements. This will make your visitors feel at ease as they see that you are talking to them individually. For example you can say things like, ?You could be our next lucky customer to win $100?.

If you have a Facebook page that is related to your company, make sure to continue adding content all the time. When you post something new, it makes your page relevant and contemporary, as followers will notice this. Also, every post that you make will appear on the current news feed for your followers, increasing your visibility.

If you offer a seasonal promotion as a part of your Internet marketing strategy, always remember to update your website once the season or holiday has passed. A current offer makes it appear that you care for your website with great attention. There is nothing that lowers consumer confidence in your product more than seeing a summer promotion in October.

Have more than one web page set up since you may be trying to reach a few different demographics of people. The same web page that attracts a 30-year-old stockbroker will not be the same one that appeals to a 65-year-old army vet, so your best bet would be to have a few different pages available.

Choose your words carefully! When marketing online, telling someone they are ?investing in your product? is much more likely to increase your chances of getting a purchase than telling them to ?buy it.? Investing signifies that your product will be useful for the long term, which is exactly what customers want in a purchase.

It?s up to you to take everything you learn and turn it into success. The more you read, experience, or hear, the more you can turn into marketing strategies that work. Keep seeking knowledge and you will find that there is no situation you can?t deal with, and that will lead you to major profits.

Mixed messages on Nexus Q support suggest Google doesn't know what to do with it, either

Yesterday there was some pretty damning news for owners of Google's Nexus Q musical orb: confirmation that the device isn't supported in the current version of the its Play Music app. This much is undoubtedly true, and verified by many owners. What is less clear, however, is whether this really is the end of the road. All the signals may be there, but some readers have forwarded us emails received from Google Play Support advising that a fix for Nexus Q streaming is definitely on the way. We contacted Google directly, but it was unable to give an official statement on the issue. We were simply told that the developer product never made it to commercial release, and as such the company can't promise either way. Mountain View isn't shy about shuttering much-loved services, so Nexus Q owners might take a small amount of solace from this current ambiguity, at least enough to delay taking matters into their own hands.

Microwave magic: Learn how microwave ovens heat up food by making two bars of soap bubble up! Image: George Retseck

Microwave Radiation
Heat
Chemical Polarity
Dipole Rotation

Introduction
Ever wonder how a microwave oven cooks your food? A microwave uses?you guessed it!?microwaves, a form of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. Think radio waves, just with a much shorter wavelength. Here's the cool thing about microwaves: They're absorbed by certain kinds of matter, whereas other kinds are left alone. In this activity, we'll try cooking up some foamy soap in order to illustrate how microwave radiation influences different types of matter.

Background
Soap is a handy combination of chemicals that do some very cool things when you use it. Soap molecules have both a polar and a nonpolar part. What' is polarity? A molecule is described as polar when it has two or more areas of different electrical charges. A water molecule is a perfect example: it has a positive pole created by the positive charge its oxygen atom and a negative pole created by the negative charges of its two hydrogen atoms. By having a polar and a nonpolar part, soap can bind to both water and dirt. This is what makes it such an effective cleanser!

Microwave ovens work by causing molecules that have two opposing poles to spin rapidly. Because of their polarity, molecules like water will constantly align themselves with a magnetic field they're subjected to. Microwave radiation creates a magnetic field that oscillates?which means that the field is constantly changing its orientation (direction the positive and negative charges face). Those shifts make polar molecules like water start spinning as they try to keep up with the changing charges. As the molecules spin, they generate heat. This process is known as dipole rotation. ("Dipole" simply means "having two poles.")

Have you ever used a microwave to boil water and found yourself wondering why the air in the microwave doesn't get hot like the air in a conventional oven? Microwave radiation causes water molecules go nuts, but the air itself isn't directly heated because its molecules aren't as polar as the molecules that make up water. This help explains why you can't make a pie's crust crispy in the microwave (due to its less polar contents), but it's easy to burn one to oblivion in a conventional oven! Polarity also explains why many plastics, glasses and ceramics are considered "microwave safe"?their molecules in these substances aren't very polar, so they aren't as disturbed by the magnetic fields shifting.

Materials
? One bar Ivory brand soap
? One bar Dial soap
? Two paper plates
? Microwave

Preparation
? Note the weight of each bar of soap, which should be written on the packages.
? Unwrap each bar.
? Place each on a paper plate, noting which one is which.

Procedure
? Microwave the Ivory soap for two minutes, carefully observing it during the whole time. What happens to the soap? Why do you think this might occur??
? Remove the plate with the soap from the microwave. Use caution, as it may be hot.
? Microwave the Dial soap for two minutes, carefully observing. Does this soap react differently than the first one? Why do you think this might be?
? Again, be careful when removing the heated plate.
? Extra: Before microwaving, weigh each bar of soap. Which is heavier? If one is heavier than the other, what do you think accounts for this difference, besides size? Do you think this might help to explain what we saw when we "cooked" the soap bars in the microwave?

New York (May 16, 2013) In the new medical textbook, Jekel's Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health (Elsevier, 2013), Wildlife Conservation Society veterinarian and Director of Health Policy, Dr. Steve Osofsky, offers a holistic approach to meeting challenges that result from humanity's ongoing population growth, globalization trends, and unsustainable demand for earth's finite natural resources.

As the human population grows and becomes more interconnected, there is increased need for land, food, water and energy. These pressures have implications for health, economies and the environment that sustains us all. Dr. Osofsky and his co-author Dr. Meredith A. Barrett, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar at UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley, point out that too often in today's world individual disciplines related to the environment, climate, human behavior, food and agriculture, and economic development function largely in isolation. Their chapter is called One Health: Interdependence of People, Other Species, and the Planet.

Instead, argue the authors, we need a cooperative "One Health" approach that brings multiple disciplines together to work locally, nationally, and globally. Only through proactive collaboration among sectors and disciplines, they say, can humanity adequately address growing needs without compromising optimal health outcomes for people, domestic animals, wildlife, and the environment. Dr. Osofsky and the Wildlife Conservation Society originally helped launch the One Health concept a decade ago.

The One Health approach calls for a paradigm shift in developing, implementing and sustaining health and environmental policies that more proactively engage human medicine, veterinary medicine, public health, environmental sciences and a wide range of other disciplines that relate to health, land use and the sustainability of human interactions with the environment.

This approach facilitates an "upstream" focus on providing solutions to problems such as zoonotic disease (diseases that move between animals and humans) before they occur. The goal is to synergistically link environmental stewardship and the health sciences so as to be able to, for example, preclude emerging disease outbreaks often associated with environmental perturbation, or to better recognize and proactively quantify the costs of various types of pollution on human, animal and ecosystem health.

One Health encourages the open exchange of information among professions to improve response times and efficiency when complex public health problems do arise, to strengthen conservation and related education efforts, and to enhance preventive options and opportunities through interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

Drs. Barrett and Osofsky's chapter presents a much-needed paradigm for the next generation of what they hope will be "One Health practitioners."

"This book chapter was written specifically to encourage medical students early-on in their careers to think more holistically about the profession they are embarking upon," said Dr. Osofsky.

"We are thrilled to contribute this material so that one of the most widely used public health texts in North American medical schools will, for the first time, offer a One Health perspective," added Dr. Barrett.

Physics Lab Tech Pleads Guilty, Receives Sentence In Cocaine Case

Man uses machine in science lab to make illicit substance.

If that sounds like a pitch for the hit AMC television show Breaking Bad, it's also a pretty fair description of a real-life crime that unfolded recently at a top university in England -- only the English case involved a lab tech and cocaine instead of a high school chemistry teacher and methamphetamine.

The man at the center of it all, Timothy Newbury, was until recently a technician in a University of Bristol physics lab. On December 27, 2012, he pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to supply after the police discovered more than $15,000 of the contraband in his car, Tom Morris, a reporter with the Bristol Post, told The Huffington Post in an email.

Newbury and an accomplice, Nicholas Avery, were suspected of using a hydraulic press in the lab to form cocaine into blocks, the Daily Mail reported. Video surveillance shows the duo entering the lab prior to being arrested.

"In effect the Crown says there was a cutting workshop at Mr. Avery's home and a pressing workshop at the university which was operated by Mr. Newbury," prosecutor Kenneth Bell said in court when the duo were sentenced May 10, 2013, the Bristol Post reported.

Newbury will spend 18 months in jail, the Bristol Post reported. Avery faces five years -- he pled guilty to an additional possession charge after police found cocaine worth $300,000 in his home.

Educating Your Prospects Real estate agents can ... - RealEstate.com

What if all of your clients knew exactly what to expect during the real estate transaction? Imagine how comfortable they would be, how less likely they would be to freak out over the smallest bump in the road. Taking the time to educate your clients takes this premise and makes it a reality.

Real estate agents can create informed clients by educating their prospectsEven better is to educate your prospects before they become clients. We all know that a prospect can be anyone, anywhere, so reaching out to the broadest possible audience in your efforts to educate makes sense.

Let?s take a look at some of the ways agents across the country are educating prospects in their efforts to created savvy clients.

Seminars

Homebuyer seminars are hardly innovative ? agents and lenders have been organizing them for decades. The agents? motives typically revolve around lead generation, and that?s OK. But the education aspect of the seminars shouldn?t be ignored.

Agent Deb Tomaro holds buyer seminars in Bloomington, Ind. Sure, the events help pull in prospects, but once converted, these people turn into the best kind of clients.

?They know what to expect, they know the process, so I?m not having to micromanage them,? Tomaro explains. ?They are able to keep things in perspective, they understand the big picture, and they know what they?re doing.?

The most important step when considering holding seminars is to determine your audience. This should be easy if you practice in a real estate niche. If you are a generalist, consider some of these audiences:

  • First-time homebuyers.
  • Vacation property buyers.
  • Government loan programs featuring low or no down payment.
  • Senior buyers.
  • Immigrant buyers.
  • Mobile-home buyers.
  • New-home buyers.
  • Veterans.
  • Horse property buyers.

The toughest part of the process is the planning, but the Real Estate Buyer?s Agent Council of the National Association of Realtors? has a handy online pamphlet that walks agents through each step.

Radio Show

Less than 1 percent of real estate agents use radio and television in their marketing campaigns, according to Matt Wagner, founder of Radio and Television Experts.

Of the two, radio is by far the preferred medium if you plan on buying advertising or hosting your own real estate show. The main advantage of radio over television is cost ? radio is far less expensive.

Now, we aren?t talking so-called radio shows or podcasts online. Instead, we?re talking Marconi?s radio, conventional broadcast radio stations with four call letters and a designated frequency ? that kind of radio.

For the purposes of educating prospects, you?ll need more than a 30 second spot. The back and forth of a call-in talk show is ideal for educating prospects.

How much will this cost? It depends on the size of the market, the station?s ratings and the time of day you choose. Stations in New York City and Los Angeles charge far more for advertising than those in Grand Forks, N.D. and Casper, Wyo.

Thankfully, real estate talk shows typically occur on weekends, when air time is the least expensive. If you live in a small enough market, and a station is in need of content, you may even end up with free air-time. But that would be the exception, not the rule.

Otherwise, many agents pound the pavement, or the telephone, to drum up sponsors for the shows, in exchange for mentions on the air. Good prospects are title companies, home inspectors and lenders.

Of course, there are ad agencies, radio airtime brokers and others, such as Radio Fifty, who will actually do all the groundwork for you, for a fee.

Teach Through Print

Although the eulogy has yet to be written, newspapers are expected to take their last gasps by 2016, according to USC?s Annenberg Center for the Digital Future. They predict that only the very largest and smallest papers will survive.

Like real estate, however, print journalism is quite local. While many real estate consumers rely on the Internet for real estate listings and information, in some towns, it?s the local newspaper that is still the go-to source.

Robin Shapiro, broker-owner of Robin Shapiro Realty in Rockaway Park, N.Y., finds great success with her hometown paper, The Wave. Before it was put online ?people would actually cross over the bridge to buy it,? she said.

If that sounds like the paper in your town, it may just be the place to offer your services as their real estate advice columnist. Call the editor and make the pitch. Even if you don?t fancy yourself a writer, you can hire an inexpensive freelance editor to go over your copy before sending it on to the paper.

If you enjoy writing, and you?re good at it, consider writing an e-book and offering it free on your website.

Edina Realty?s Kris Lindahl started offering his free e-book, ?A Homeowner?s Guide to Short Sales,? last year.

?Short sales are one of the most confusing real estate transactions for the general public,? he explains. ?I?m finding that the prospects I convert from my e-book are far better informed and prepared for the short sale process than others,? he concludes.

Yes, writing an e-book is time consuming. Formatting it is also a time suck. That?s why many agents hire ghostwriters to write their books. Depending on the length of the book, most ghostwriters aren?t as expensive as you might think.

Blogging

Blogging helps you educate prospects on a range of real estate issues. It?s a great way to let them know about current market trends so they know what to expect when they decide to enter the market.

Examples on blog topics that help educate prospects include:

  • Financing - This is such a confusing topic for real estate consumers. Make it easy for them to understand.
  • Buying distressed properties - The pros and cons and what to watch for.
  • Common real estate terms and what they mean - Just go through your listing or purchase agreement and you?ll find a plethora of jargon that befuddles most real estate consumers. What?s a contingency? What is ?arm?s length??
  • Closing - Aside from financing, the closing process is probably the most mysterious they?ll encounter. Demystify it by explaining what happens, who will be there, and what paperwork they?ll be confronted with.

While there are many ways to educate your clients, why not choose a method that reaches a massive amount of people and combines lead generation with education? Even if you have to pay for the method, you can bask in the fact that you?re getting a two-fer.

Seeing Google Glass from a Toddler's Perspective Is So Adorable

The best thing about Google Glass might be its ability to give anyone a perspective they never see anymore. Whether it's the intensity of playing hockey or uh, the weirdness of being someone else in the shower, it's like a less obtrusive GoPro camera seeing what people's eyes see. This might be the best perspective though: a toddler.

Google Glass from the eyes of a toddler is just absolutely adorable. Chris Angelini attached Google Glass to his two-year-old and let his kid go wild with it. You can see the world as he sees it: fresh, curious, low to the ground and in desperate need of juice (preferably through a cup with a straw). It's so honest.

Angelini's two-year-old's reactions on Google Glass range from "Mom! Look at my cool glasses!" to "cool gwasses" to "I'm done. They're hot". It's nice to be a kid again and be just as amazed with apple juice, Lego, footballs and Google Glass. [Chris Angelini via Digg Videos]

Google Hangouts video chat won't connect over AT&T

If you have a smartphone connected to AT&T, you just got a bit more incentive to hop over to WiFi whenever possible. The new Google+ Hangouts app group video chat feature appears to be disabled whenever you attempt to connect via the cellular network. We tested the feature using a Verizon handset as well -- we were able to stream video just fine. It's not entirely clear whether AT&T has specifically blocked access to the service, but regardless of the reason, we're all too familiar with the carrier's desire to keep video chat off the airwaves. We can only hope that we'll be able to use Hangouts to its full potential soon, just as we can with Apple's FaceTime.

On guns: For a conversation rather than debate, start with these questions

The deep civic divide over guns was the focus of an April 11, 2013 storytelling and civil dialogue hosted by The Christian Science Monitor in partnership with the Public Conversations Project and The Mantle Project.

VIDEO ? On guns: from debate to conversation

Participants created questions of curiosity that would be tools for less polarized conversations. We include some of them here and we encourage you to add your own in the comments section:

What does a gun symbolize to you? What might it symbolize to others? What comes to mind when you think of all these symbols?

Could you imagine sitting down with someone who has a totally different perspective from yours on guns? And listening? Without interrupting?

Why do you care about the gun issue?

With the assumption that everyone wants to reduce gun deaths, why is the debate so polarized and why can't the multiple positions start from this area of common ground for policies and actions that are workable? Do you see any common ground between those for and against guns?

There seems to be a ?gun rights? culture, a ?gun control? culture, and maybe a ?gun safety? culture. Are these cultures reconcilable? How might we develop a culture that has the benefits of all these without the risks of any of them?

If you were to become a gun owner, what would you do to ensure the safety of others around you? How would you care for the weapon? What steps would you take?

For gun owners: What are the top two or three positive emotions or feelings that guns bring to you and/or your family? What do you use your gun for?

For those against guns: What feelings do you associate with firearms? What are the factors that should be taken into account when regulating guns?

Are there ways to address the fears of gun advocates that would preserve their essential liberty while gaining their support for measures that would protect society better?

As a gun owner or supporter of firearms, what do you think would be the type of regulation or education that would be most useful in minimizing gun violence?

Is the instinct to defend life, liberty and loved ones innate biologically, spiritually, or a social construct?

How much has the popular media ? movies, video, games, news ? affected your view of guns?

How do we agree to disagree on the use of guns yet focus on preventing the misuse?

What interventions/strategies have been proven to improve gun safety?

Could you appreciate a dialogue on guns that acknowledges the presence and use of guns in our world rather than fans the fire of one ?side? or another?

James, Heat beat Bulls 88-65 for 3-1 series lead

CHICAGO (AP) ? The way this series is turning out, it's hard to believe the Miami Heat ever trailed the Chicago Bulls.

They're running away with the Eastern Conference semifinals, and another performance like this will end it.

LeBron James scored 27 points and the Heat nearly matched a franchise record for fewest points allowed in a playoff game, pounding the listless and short-handed Bulls 88-65 on Monday night to take a 3-1 lead in the series.

"We just worked as hard as we could on defense," Chris Bosh said. "After the Game 3 performance, we really didn't feel like we did a very good job. We just wanted to have more energy today and concentrate on our coverages a lot better."

Well, how's this for a result?

The 65 points allowed were only two more than the all-time postseason low for a Miami opponent, and it was easily the worst offensive performance by a Chicago team in the playoffs.

Never before had the Bulls scored fewer than 69 in a playoff game nor 10 or less in a quarter during the postseason, but both those marks fell on a night when they were dominated on both ends of the floor.

Miami led by 11 at the half and put this one away in the third quarter, outscoring Chicago 17-9 in the period.

Now the Heat will try to wrap up the series at home Wednesday night, taking what they hope will be the next step toward a second straight championship.

They're in this spot because they shook off a loss in the series opener and haven't looked back.

Miami pounded Chicago in Game 2, coming away with its most lopsided playoff victory while handing the Bulls their worst ever postseason loss ? and the Heat continued to roll from there.

James had his usual complete game with eight assists and seven rebounds Monday.

Bosh finished with 14 points after scoring 20 and grabbing 19 rebounds in Game 3, and the Heat won again despite another quiet night from Dwyane Wade (six points), whose right knee was bothering him again. He appeared to aggravate it on a fallaway jumper during the game but was able to return after getting re-taped.

"It's frustrating at times, but you just try to do what you can," Wade said.

Norris Cole also struggled with seven points after back-to-back 18-point performances, but the Heat had more than enough in this one.

They shot about 49 percent while the Bulls set a franchise playoff low at 25.7 percent. Chicago was particularly bad from the outside, going 2 for 17 from 3-point range.

The Bulls again were missing ailing Luol Deng and injured Kirk Hinrich (calf), and a team that kept finding ways to win despite being short-handed all season simply appeared to run out of steam, even though coach Tom Thibodeau rejected that idea.

"No," he said. "I think the thing is they're (Heat) a great team. We have to come out with great intensity ? but we also have to make shots."

There's no denying the Bulls have been in a tough spot all year with Derrick Rose recovering from knee surgery and just about every other major player sidelined at some point. They've been hit particularly hard in the postseason, too.

"They're in a tough situation," James said. "They've had some injuries and illnesses and whatever's going on. They don't have their full roster, but that's not for us to worry about. They beat a very good Brooklyn team (in the first round) without their full roster."

Carlos Boozer had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the postseason, but was just 3 of 14 from the field. Jimmy Butler scored 12 and Joakim Noah grabbed nine rebounds, but it was a miserable night for Chicago ? particularly Nate Robinson. With Cole and Mario Chalmers harassing him and the big men helping out, he missed all 12 of his shots and did not score.

He said he fell hard on his left shoulder on a pick-and-roll at one point, although he couldn't remember exactly when, and had it wrapped in ice afterward. Then he took off the wrapping and threw it hard to the floor.

"Go back to the drawing board and figure it out," he said.

Richard Hamilton scored 11 points in a rare postseason appearance, and the former All-Star guard made it clear afterward he's not thrilled with his reduced role.

"Lot of stuff in life you don't understand," he said. "This (playoffs) is what I was brought here for. To not be able play and help my teammates, it's hard, it's rough. But I try to stay positive. I don't try to rock the boat."

Hamilton said he and Thibodeau have talked. Then, he reiterated, "It's hard to understand."

Notes: The Heat and Bulls were well represented on the NBA's all-defensive first team, with James and Noah being selected. ... Thibodeau had nothing to say about the $35,000 fine from the league for comments he made about the officiating in Game 3. Asked if he was surprised by the amount, he said, "I've got no comment on that. We're just getting ready for Game 4." ... Deng was listed as active after initially being ruled out for Chicago. Hinrich and Rose were inactive.
