Dauphin County Commissioners to award municipal gaming grants ...

The Dauphin County Commissioners will award almost $7 million in gaming grants to various municipalities throughout the county during the commissioners? weekly meeting at 10 a.m. Feb. 29.

The county Gaming Advisory Board yesterday finalized a list of municipal projects it will present to the commissioners for their review on Feb. 22.

Recommendations include:

  • $250,000 for Harrisburg Area Community College.
  • $238,000 for Halifax borough.
  • $85,000 for River Rescue.
  • $56,000 for the American Red Cross.?

The commissioners have an extra $1.3 million of optional funding to use at its discretion, too.

The following were included in a list of recommendations for that funding:

  • $335,000 for the Harrisburg Fire Bureau.
  • $125,000 for the Capital Region Economic Development Corp.
  • $100,000 for Harristown Development Corp.
  • $4,500 for the Millersburg Senior Center.

Each year, municipalities apply for a portion of revenue the county receives from Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course.

The county received more than $20 million in requests from the 2011 pool of money.

The state-sponsored Act 47 plan Harrisburg City Council rejected last year recommended Harrisburg apply for $2 million of gaming money annually for five years to help offset the city?s budget deficit.

Mayor Linda Thompson asked for $3 million of? revenue from the gaming pot in a follow-up plan she issued, which council also rejected.

The commissioners said in November any chance at filling Harrisburg's budget hole with gaming money expired when council rejected the Act 47 plan, however.

The recovery plan Harrisburg Receiver David Unkovic introduced Feb. 6 for the city does not include a request for gaming money from the county.?
