Q&A: Spotting a Better Business Scam - NYTimes.com

March 6, 2012, 6:16 am By J.D. BIERSDORFER

Q.

I just got an e-mail claiming to be from the Better Business Bureau. It said there was a complaint about my business and provided a link to a report. I am suspicious. Should I be?

A.

Yes. The Better Business Bureau reports a number of complaint report messages going around. These appear to be from the bureau but are really phishing scams. These sorts of malicious messages are usually out to steal personal information or infect your computer. If you are suspicious, the agency asks that you forward the message to them at phishing@council.bbb.org.

If you are at all concerned that the message might actually be from the Better Business Bureau, contact your local office directly and inquire about the message.
