Trees are not the first thing that comes to mind about the New Mexican desert, but we used to be one of the nation?s largest tree covers at almost 41 percent in the 1990s. Now Albuquerque is one of the top five worst cities in the nation with a decline in overall tree canopy cover.
The Tree New Mexico organization will be providing 480 free trees to hundreds of New Mexicans in Corrales, Bernalillo, Belen and Los Lunas on Saturday, Sept. 29 in order to launch its Tree New Mexico?s Energy Conservation and Trees program.
Trees can save homeowners up to 20 percent on energy bills and by reducing energy reduces harmful power plant emissions while increasing carbon sequestration. The event helps provide a better tree canopy throughout the state which Albuquerque has lost 2.7 percent of total tree canopy from 2006 to 2009.
